Pizza & Movie Night! 🍕 🎥 The kids & I went Pizza & Movie Night! 🍕 🎥 The kids & I went on a walk today and picked up pizza kits, dough, and @jcqfarms sausage (along with a bunch of other goodies) from @sanitarymarketsc . We are SO thrilled to have such a great market with fresh, healthy, local food just up the street! The pizza was delicious! Note to self: next time get more 😬 The kids ended up making “pizza toast” since mommy didn’t get enough pizza…whoops! 🤣 Such a fun family night. This is one of my favorite home remedies to have on hand for ALL the sick things. And it is so very simple. Took a while for the kids to get on board, but now they ask for it anytime they start to feel sick. I did chop the cloves up into smaller pieces this time, per their request. 🤣 Do you have any favorite home remedies for your family? *Disclaimer: I am obviously not a doctor and do not have a medical background. New year, new favorite cake! This cranberry orange New year, new favorite cake! This cranberry orange cake from “The Broken Bread” was a hit with everyone. It might just be the perfect winter cake 😋 I subbed fresh milled soft white wheat for the flour & duck eggs. Added some lovely candied cranberries oranges, and it turned out both beautiful and delicious! Plus it’s made with fresh milled flour, cranberries & oranges - so that makes it healthy, right?!? This cake is equally good as a dessert, or alongside a cup of coffee or tea for breakfast! On the menu this year were jambalaya, shrimp etoufee, rice dressing, and maque choux. I make a king cake 1-2 times a year. Once for our I make a king cake 1-2 times a year. Once for our annual 12th night celebration. And sometimes for a special someone’s (ahem @garrettguillory) birthday. Between the enriched dough, multiple rises, filling(s), braiding/shaping, frosting, and colored sugars - they are indeed a labor of love. But worth it. A special treat, for a special celebration. Traditionally king cakes have a plastic baby hidden inside - whoever finds the baby gets to be king for the night…and is responsible for bringing the king cake the next year. But we decided to make this tradition our own…and add a bit of #lagniappe. So as I’m filling the king cake, we hide 3 pecans or almonds. And the 3 party guests who find them receive a small gift from us. We do this to help remember why we are celebrating - the visit of the wise men and the 3 gifts they brought to the Christ child. This year our gifts were a handmade sheep (to represent Christ as the lamb 🐑), hand-rolled candles (to represent the Light of the world that came at Christmas), and a small bottle of frankincense. These little gifts are one of my favorite parts of our 12th night tradition. 🥰 The cake this year didn’t turn out to be my best. The filling exploded a bit during the second rise (not sure why exactly) 😅 but it still turned out pretty delicious, and we got to share it with our family & friends - so that’s what matters! @garrettguillory is trying to convince me that I just need more practice since I only make it once or twice a year. I suppose he’s probably right. Such a fun day of Thanksgiving prep with my little Such a fun day of Thanksgiving prep with my little helpers! - gf egg free pecan pies ✔️ - cranberry apple chutney ✔️ - smothered green beans ✔️ - smoked holiday ham (by @garrettguillory) ✔️ Tomorrow we’ll be adding… - rice dressing (gotta have a Cajun dish!) - gf cornbread 🌽 - honey butter - big fall salad with maple bacon vinaigrette & candied pecans - homemade whipped cream…because desserts! Family is bringing all the other yummy thanksgiving dishes - turkey, sweet potatoes, mac & cheese, etc. As usual, I’ve done a little “extra”, but I wanted to add plenty of gluten/egg/mustard/turkey free dishes that the hubby can eat, so he won’t feel deprived. Today was @azurestandard pick up day, so the kids Today was @azurestandard pick up day, so the kids and I headed down to Simpsonville this morning to help unload the truck. I feel like it’s always a good experience for them to have to work a little for their food 😂 And as prices are climbing and quality is dropping at the grocery store, I’m very grateful to have this as an option. We haven’t been here for the pickup for several months so we got quite a few (different) things this month. Here is a highlight of some of the things I’m excited to try…. ~New line of Azure canned goods (just in time to bake all the #pumpkinspice things!) ~vanilla extract & maple syrup ~ COFFEE! ~Clean-cleaning products ~ Trace minerals magnesium flakes & mineral drops ~ Shampoo, conditioner & soaps ~ Lots of baking goodies to make gluten free treats ~ Azure canning jars (I might be most excited about these 😆) to store grains, etc. I might try to do a post comparing price and quality of different products like these at some point. Anyone interested in that or just learning more about Azure Standard? (I’m not an affiliate or anything, just love shopping with them for grains & other pantry staples & products for around the house)?
If you know us, you know we LOVE our coffee! ☕️ So when our (new) friends over at @psalmbirdlife offered to send us some samples, we were so excited! They sent us a medium and dark roast to try. The medium roast was absolute perfection! No sugar or cream necessary. It is hands down the best #coffee we’ve had in a loooong time! And while we aren’t typically dark roast people, we enjoyed the dark roast as well. Psalmbird’s 150:6 is a fair-trade, organically grown, European processed, strictly hard bean Guatemala coffee. It is freshly roasted in Lebanon, TN. (Wish we had found them before we moved!) And best yet - the family company aligns with our values. 🙌🏼 We are looking forward to ordering more, and couldn’t recommend this coffee more! Even our little helpers agree. ❤️ (In case you’re worried the 5-yo had just a small taste with lots of cream, and the 2yo just enjoyed the lovely coffee aroma and helped stir 🤣)
